Why do Montessori children attend Kindergarten?

Our kindergarten program continues to cultivate and enhance cognitive development, speech and language development, strengthening of fine and gross motor skills, practical life skills, independence, confidence, kindness, and empathy.

Kindergarteners are explorers and investigators and we reinforce this desire to explore by encouraging freedom in the classroom, offering children access to fascinating Montessori materials accompanied with nurturing and skilled teachers.  Montessori materials aim to foster self-discovery, independence, and promote healthy socialization.

Curriculum

Language – Students will continue to learn auditory preparation (conversational, storytelling, poetry), visual preparation, handwriting, language analysis, more advanced reading, expression and word functioning (nouns, verbs etc.).

Mathematics – Students will be busy learning numbers, the decimal system, linear counting, arithmetic operations (games to learn addition and subtraction) and geometry.

Science – Students will learn about the world they live in.  They will also learn how they can cause changes in their immediate and global environment.  Students will learn life science, physical science, Earth science, biology, and scientific reasoning (hypothesis, testing, etc.).

Cultural Studies – Children develop a stronger sense of wonder and empathy when learning cultural studies. We will continue teaching and providing materials in the subjects of history, literature and geography.

Practical Life – Students will learn physical skills, environmental awareness, respect, independence, self-care, nutrition, safety, health, time management, organization skills, and problem solving.

Visual Arts – Teachers will continue strengthening creativity, problem solving and self-expression.  We will also incorporate lessons in drawing, painting, sculpture and collage making.  Students will learn lines, shapes, form, color concepts, texture, patterns, organization, and spatial awareness.

Music – Song and dance offer fun, self-expression, and healthy socialization all while building confidence.  Moreover, song and dance help create strong bonds and friendships between students.

Physical Education – We teach students the importance of health and physical fitness at a very young age.  We move, run, jump, roll and stretch to promote health, longevity, self-esteem, and increase concentration as well as energy.  Additionally, children are able to understand how far they can push themselves physically and learn what their bodies are capable of doing.

Parent participation

Parents are kindly asked not to participate in class activities during school hours.  This causes a dependence upon the parent as well as creates a distraction in the classroom for both students and teacher.  However, parents are more than welcome to come into the classroom to observe progress.  We request that your presence is not disruptive to scheduled activities or other children.
